EXPLANATION OF THE
CODING SYSTEM

Direct ancestors have codes in this format:

[letter A or B], [number denoting family group], - , [number of generations back]

e.g. A1-3, A5-5, B2-3

Letter A or B:

A = Father's ancestors.
B = Mother's ancestors.

Family group codes are as follows:

1 = Own (and parent's) male lineage

2 = Parent's mother's male lineage

3 = Parent's father's mother's male lineage
4 = Parent's mother's mother's male lineage

5 = Parent's father's father's mother's male lineage
6 = Parent's mother's father's mother's male lineage
7 = Parent's father's mother's mother's male lineage
8 = Parent's mother's mother's mother's male lineage

9 = Parent's father's father's father's mother's male lineage
10 = Parent's mother's father's father's mother's male lineage
11 = Parent's father's mother's father's mother's male lineage
12 = Parent's mother's mother's father's mother's male lineage
13 = Parent's father's father's mother's mother's male lineage
14 = Parent's mother's father's mother's mother's male lineage

The second number follows a minus symbol, this denotes how many generations back.

Direct lineage (i.e. not branches off):

Noted by highlighted names in the main database, red (Felice), or blue (Alex).
NOTE: Browsers other than Microsoft IE may not show this highlighting.

Branches off are coded as above (no highlighting), but have additional, lower-case letters as a suffix. Each letter (a to r) denotes an individual blood relative, descending the alphabet in order of birth (where known) for siblings.

Additional letters u, v, and w denote partners and letters x, y, z, s, and t
denote spouses (1st to 5th respectively).

Some examples:

A1-3a is a sibling of direct descendant A1-3 (father's father's father), three generations back in family group code A1. His/her spouse would be A1-3ax, and their children would be A1-3aa, A1-3ab, A1-3ac, etc. The spouse of A1-3aa would be A1-3aax, and their children would be A1-3aaa, A1-3aab, etc.

Other, non-related spouses of direct ancestors just have an 'x' (or 'y' or 'z' etc.) as a suffix to the ancestor's code, e.g. A1-3x. Children by that spouse would be A1-3xa etc. Partners (i.e. unmarried) and their children follow the same principle, but using letters u, v, w.
